Senate intervenes in ASUU strike, vows to address funding, land issues

The Senate has stepped in to address the ongoing crisis between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government, which led to a two-week warning strike. Senator Muntari Dandutse, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, met with ASUU representatives and assured them that their concerns would be taken seriously. He emphasized that the Senate is committed to ensuring universities receive the necessary support. After the meeting, Dandutse announced plans to communicate with the Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission for further negotiations. ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, highlighted issues like funding, university autonomy, and the University of Abuja’s land dispute. Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau stressed the importance of resolving the crisis quickly, as education is key to society’s future.
