Senior general opens Matho robe weaving for festival

Myanmar’s military leader presided over the launch of traditional robe weaving ceremonies on Monday evening at a prominent Buddha statue park in the capital.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and his spouse, Daw Kyu Kyu Hla, arrived at Fountain Square within Maravijaya Buddha Park for the Tazaungdine festival kickoff. Cultural performers from state television and the fine arts department greeted the couple with traditional welcomes. Religious Affairs Minister U Tin Oo Lwin delivered ceremonial remarks before the senior general and his wife cut the ribbon to signal the start of work at 15 weaving stations. Trustee board member U Thant Swe struck a ceremonial gong as teams began their overnight task of creating golden lotus garments for presentation to the statue. Spectators released illuminated balloons and lanterns while musicians performed seasonal songs with accompanying choreography.

Vice Senior General Soe Win attended alongside Prime Minister U Nyo Saw and other cabinet officials with their families. The three-day festival features 9,000 oil lamps arranged on the statue platform, fireworks displays, and hot air balloon releases. Vendors occupy stalls selling domestic goods and local foods while performers stage nightly entertainment programs for visiting pilgrims.
