Shivraj Singh Chouhan announces Rs 1.60 lakh for flood-hit Punjab families

Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, visited the Indian Institute of Maize Research (ICAR-IIMR) on Tuesday and announced that Rs 1.60 lakh per family has been approved for rebuilding 36,703 houses damaged by recent floods in Punjab. He also engaged with maize stakeholders, farmers, beneficiaries of rural development schemes, and members of women self-help groups (SHGs).

Chouhan highlighted key government initiatives in agriculture and rural development for Punjab. He emphasized the importance of agricultural diversification, noting that maize is the third most important crop after wheat and rice, offering both food and industrial uses. He also announced Rs 74 crore for free wheat seed distribution and Rs 222 crore for PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi payments to over 11 lakh farmers.

Chouhan reaffirmed the Union government’s support for Punjab’s recovery, with Prime Minister Modi approving a Rs 1,600 crore relief package for flood-affected families. He urged people to support Indian-made products, strengthening the local economy and promoting self-reliance.
