Ashwini Vaishnaw proposes Andaman as global internet hub
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Tuesday that the government plans to turn the Andaman and Nicobar Islands into a major hub for global internet data transfer, offering full support for this initiative. He emphasized the strategic location of the islands and the potential to connect to Southeast Asia, Australia, and other regions seeking new data capacity, with a particular focus on undersea subsea cable connectivity.
Vaishnaw also proposed establishing a Vizag-Sittwe (Myanmar) link to improve digital connectivity in northeastern states, including a cable extension to Mizoram. He stressed the importance of enhancing the RailTel network and completing the railway extension to the Myanmar border.
He highlighted AI services as a key part of India’s digital economy and urged Google to contribute to talent development and job creation. Vaishnaw welcomed Google’s Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to compete with Nvidia’s GPUs, supporting the India AI Mission. Google also announced a $15 billion investment to set up an AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, accelerating AI-driven transformation in India.
