Sofia mulls paid parking for electric cars

Sofia authorities are considering eliminating free parking privileges for electric vehicles starting in January 2027 to address congestion in central areas. Municipal councilor Carlos Contrera from VMRO indicated that approximately 12,700 electric cars operate among 1.2 million registered vehicles nationwide, representing roughly one percent of the total fleet.

Contrera explained that current policies allowing unlimited parking without fees have enabled some electric vehicle owners to occupy spaces for extended periods, creating imbalances in high-demand zones. His proposal includes implementing an annual sticker system with a transition period extending through 2026.

The councilor also addressed concerns about official parking subscriptions, acknowledging that institutions may establish security zones if restrictions are imposed. He stated his readiness to introduce legislation next week outlining procedures for creating such zones through mayoral orders and approved traffic plans.
