Solar power with storage cheaper than new thermal plants, study finds
A report by TERI reveals that solar power combined with storage is now cheaper than building new thermal plants to meet round-the-clock electricity demand. The study, based on BSES Rajdhani Power Limited’s peak demand day, compared costs of solar power with battery storage systems (BESS) and pumped storage plants (PSP) to thermal generation.
Solar with BESS costs Rs 3.9 to Rs 4.3 per kWh, while solar with PSP ranges from Rs 4.4 to Rs 4.9 per kWh. In comparison, new thermal plants cost Rs 5.4 to Rs 5.8 per kWh. Experts suggest expanding affordable storage to support India’s green power future. India’s solar capacity has grown from 61 GW in 2020 to 125 GW in 2025.
