Sony, AMD reveal key features for PlayStation 6 chips
Sony and AMD recently shared new details about their Project Amethyst collaboration, revealing three key features: Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores, and Universal Compression. These updates will be integrated into future AMD GPUs and consoles, including PlayStation 6.
In a brief video, PlayStation architect Mark Cerny and AMD’s Jack Huynh explained how Project Amethyst marks a shift in Sony’s strategy, focusing more on co-development with AMD. Cerny highlighted the potential for wider adoption of new features across platforms like desktops, laptops, and consoles. However, he cautioned that the full impact of these technologies will depend on how developers implement them.
Cerny also confirmed that Universal Compression aims to improve memory efficiency, while future PlayStation hardware will emphasize machine learning and ray tracing over traditional rasterization.
