Spain’s PM calls for accountability in Gaza genocide after truce with Hamas
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized that a truce between Hamas and Israel should not come at the cost of accountability for those responsible for the “genocide” in Gaza. He stated that peace should not mean impunity and that those responsible, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, must face justice. Spain had announced in September it would investigate human rights violations in Gaza in coordination with the International Criminal Court, which has issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant.
Sanchez also reaffirmed Spain’s arms embargo on Israel and indicated that Spain could participate in future peace efforts and Gaza’s reconstruction. The war in Gaza, which began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant casualties, with over 67,000 people killed in Gaza, mostly civilians.
In a related matter, Human Rights Watch (HRW) urged Lebanon to pursue justice for the 2023 Israeli strike that killed Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah and injured others, including AFP staff. Lebanon has tasked its justice ministry with investigating the crime, offering a chance for accountability. HRW called the attack on journalists a war crime and urged the case be referred to the International Criminal Court.
