Stankov, US officials talk nukes and gas in Athens

Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov took part in the Sixth Ministerial Meeting of the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy Cooperation in Athens, where he met with US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright to review progress on joint energy initiatives. The discussions highlighted strategic projects such as the Vertical Gas Corridor and the planned construction of new units at Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant using Westinghouse’s AR 1000 technology. Minister Stankov noted that an upcoming contract with a consortium of Westinghouse and Hyundai aims to ensure the success of this major development.

Stankov and Wright also addressed cooperation in nuclear energy, particularly Bulgaria’s interest in small modular reactors. A previously signed joint statement allows Bulgaria to benefit from American expertise for feasibility studies and site evaluations, with plans to invite leading technology companies to participate in future projects. Minister Stankov stressed the value of American experience and modern technologies in enhancing Bulgaria’s long-standing track record in safe nuclear operations.

Further meetings focused on attracting investment in energy infrastructure, with the US Export-Import Bank reaffirming support for new nuclear plants in Bulgaria. Talks with the US Development Finance Corporation centered on additional energy projects, including the deployment of advanced power and storage solutions to improve the flexibility and stability of Bulgaria’s energy sector.
