Storm devastates western Alaska, flooding homes and leaving several missing

A powerful storm wreaked havoc on western Alaska, flooding communities, destroying homes, and leaving people missing. At least 34 people were rescued from the hardest-hit areas of Kwigillingok and Kipnuk, where strong winds and rising waters sent homes crashing off their foundations. Three people are still unaccounted for, and additional missing residents are being investigated.

The storm, a remnant of Typhoon Halong, battered the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, ripping homes from their foundations and sweeping away entire structures, some with families inside. Rescue operations are ongoing, with help from the Alaska State Troopers, Air National Guard, and U.S. Coast Guard. Senator Lisa Murkowski called the devastation “heartbreaking” as communities face unimaginable loss.
