Tarique Rahman to chair BNP Standing Committee meeting

Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders will gather at midday on Monday to determine final candidate selections for parliamentary districts ahead of scheduled national voting, with acting chairman Tarique Rahman presiding remotely from London.

The standing committee session begins at 12:30 p.m. at party headquarters in Gulshan, where divisional organizing secretaries will join senior members for deliberations expected to center on endorsing single nominees across constituencies. A media briefing will follow at 3 p.m., according to party spokesman Sayrul Kabir Khan. The gathering occurs one day after Rahman announced plans to release an initial slate of approximately 200 candidates while activating digital enrollment systems for supporters worldwide.

Rahman previously acknowledged that not all aspirants would receive backing because the organization intends to endorse nominees from allied democratic movements that opposed authoritarian governance. He cautioned members against internal conflicts that could benefit adversaries and invoked the party symbol of rice sheaves as representing collective success. Standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed expectations for publishing about 200 names in early November, emphasizing that both successful and unsuccessful applicants must rally behind officially designated contenders.
