Tarique Rahman vows to unite BNP for upcoming election
Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s acting leader Tarique Rahman announced that his organization has nearly finalized candidate selections across all 300 parliamentary districts ahead of anticipated national voting.
Speaking through a virtual address while launching international membership enrollment initiatives on Sunday, Rahman acknowledged that multiple qualified party members are competing for nominations in most districts. He explained that some hopefuls will be passed over because the party plans to back candidates from other democratic organizations that participated in resistance against authoritarian rule. Rahman urged disappointed aspirants to accept these decisions for the nation’s benefit, invoking late President Ziaur Rahman’s principle that national interests supersede individual ambitions. He warned supporters against internal conflicts that could benefit adversaries with concealed dictatorial intentions.
Rahman expressed worry about mounting public skepticism regarding whether the February elections will proceed as planned, noting such doubts threaten democratic progress. He praised election officials for enabling expatriate voting despite its complexity, pledging to streamline the process if his party takes power. The announcement coincided with the activation of digital membership enrollment through the party website, allowing global supporters to join or contribute electronically.
