Tchiroma claims victory in Cameroon’s presidential election, urges Biya to accept defeat
Cameroon opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma declared victory in the October 12 presidential election, urging President Paul Biya to accept defeat and respect the election results. Tchiroma, a former government spokesperson, claimed the people had chosen him, demanding that Biya honor the truth of the ballot.
Biya’s party, the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), dismissed Tchiroma’s declaration as a “grotesque hoax,” stating only the Constitutional Council can announce official results. The Minister of Territorial Administration also criticized Tchiroma and pledged to maintain order during the election period.
Biya, seeking an eighth term after 43 years in power, faces challenges from public discontent over economic issues and insecurity. Tchiroma promised to release detailed regional vote counts soon, emphasizing that his victory represents the people’s choice.
