Teacher hammers kin in gold theft spree
A teacher in Mandalay faces murder charges after fatally beating her elderly aunt with a hammer and severely injuring her cousin in a robbery motivated by debt. Police discovered 84-year-old Daw Khin Soe Myint dead from head trauma and her 36-year-old granddaughter, Ma Aye Aye Khine, critically wounded at their residence in Myothit Ward 2 on Saturday.
Authorities arrested Ma Soe Soe Tun, a junior assistant teacher at a school in PyinOoLwin, when she returned to the crime scene that evening. The suspect admitted to attacking both women on Friday with a hammer before stealing 10 million kyats and a gold bar weighing 10 ticals, which she sold to settle outstanding debts. Investigators continue recovering stolen items as they build their case against the accused.
