Teachers blockade Dhaka’s Shahbagh demanding pay hikes
Several teachers from non-government institutions in Bangladesh, listed under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme, blocked the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka on Wednesday. They are protesting for higher benefits, including a 20% house rent allowance, a medical allowance of 1500 Taka, and a 75% festival bonus. The protest, now in its fourth day, escalated when demonstrators broke through police barricades, halting traffic.
The teachers have been protesting since Sunday at the Central Shaheed Minar. They demand the government meet their full requests after a previous allowance increase. The teachers vow to continue blocking Shahbagh until their demands are met.
