Tensions flare at Chittagong University after election irregularities
Chittagong University in Bangladesh suspended the student union election results of two halls after claims of voting irregularities and unrest. The radical Islamist group Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, won key positions, including vice-president and general secretary.
The Election Commission announced a recount of the results from Atish Dipankar Srigyan Hall and Suhrawardy Hall, though no specific reasons were given. Tensions flared at Suhrawardy Hall when protests broke out between Chhatra Dal and Shibir supporters.
Protests led to the detention of Pro Vice-Chancellor Md Kamal Hossain, and a police officer was injured during clashes. Concerns over voting irregularities have grown, with similar issues at Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University.
