Toplofikatsiya cash vanishes, bankruptcy fears grow

Sofia’s district heating utility saw its bank deposits plummet from 201 million leva to 54 million leva between August and September as the winter heating period approached and natural gas purchases loomed. Municipal councilor Boris Bonev from Save Sofia disclosed the financial strain through a social media post on Sunday.

The company faces mounting pressure while funding a renovation project at Druzhba, estimated at 50 million leva. The heating provider must cover construction expenses and secure fuel supplies with only 54 million leva remaining in available funds.

Bonev criticized local officials for blocking his organization’s request for an independent technical review of the utility’s operations. He accused the mayor, along with representatives from GERB and BSP, of obstructing accountability measures. The councilor questioned whether authorities would wait until the company collapsed before taking action.
