Torch procession held in five districts to demand Teesta Master Plan
A torch procession was held simultaneously in five northern districts on Thursday evening, demanding the immediate implementation of the Teesta Master Plan to protect the river and the livelihoods dependent on it. The event, organized by the “Jago Bahe Teesta Bachai” (Rise to Save Teesta) movement, took place across 11 locations in Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, and Gaibandha.
Principal Asadul Habib Dulu, the movement’s chief coordinator and former state minister, inaugurated the programme. He emphasized the national importance of the Teesta issue and warned that if the river’s future is not secured, a larger political movement would follow. Dulu stressed that the Teesta River is vital for both the northern region and Bangladesh’s economy, urging immediate action on the Teesta Master Plan.
The programme also highlighted growing concerns over river erosion and the appearance of sandbars, which have displaced thousands, damaging homes and farmland. The event saw active participation from leaders and activists from various political parties, social organizations, and youth groups.
