Trump authorizes CIA covert ops in Venezuela despite controversy

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump confirmed he had authorized the CIA to carry out covert operations in Venezuela. He cited two reasons: Venezuela emptying its prisons into the U.S. and the large flow of drugs coming from the country, particularly through the sea. Trump also hinted that the U.S. may consider land operations in the region.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro responded angrily, criticizing the CIA’s history of involvement in coups and calling for peace instead of war in Latin America. He rejected Trump’s statements, calling them a violation of international law.

In Congress, both Democrats and Republicans expressed concerns about the lack of transparency and oversight in Trump’s actions, questioning whether the U.S. is heading toward conflict. Lawmakers have also complained about the administration not providing evidence that the targeted boats were carrying drugs. Human rights groups are worried the strikes could violate international law.
