Trump authorizes CIA ops in Venezuela amid tensions
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump confirmed that he allowed the CIA to carry out secret operations in Venezuela. He also said he was considering expanding military actions against Venezuelan drug cartels. Trump explained his decision by accusing President Nicolás Maduro of leading a “narco-terrorist regime.”
Maduro strongly opposed the actions, accusing the US of planning a “CIA-led coup.” He also ordered military exercises in Venezuela to defend against foreign threats. Tensions grew after US strikes on alleged drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean, killing at least 27 people.
International law experts questioned the legality of the US operations, and many in Latin America viewed them as a push for regime change.
