Trump eyes trade deals, ceasefire pacts in Asia

US President Donald Trump opened his Asia tour on Sunday in Malaysia by signing trade agreements with Cambodia and Thailand after facilitating the ceasefire accord between the two countries. He expressed optimism about reaching a substantial trade agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinping at their forthcoming meeting in South Korea.

Trump voiced confidence ahead of the South Korea summit aimed at resolving the economic dispute between the two largest global economies. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng wrapped up two days of negotiations, with China’s vice commerce minister announcing a preliminary consensus had been reached.

The American leader attended the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Kuala Lumpur, where he co-signed a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. He characterized the truce as a monumental step after the deadliest border clashes between the neighbors in recent decades.

Trump travels to Japan on Monday before heading to Busan, South Korea, on Wednesday for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Markets worldwide will monitor whether his meeting with Xi on Thursday can end the trade conflict sparked by sweeping American tariffs.
