Trump threatens to raise tariffs on Canada over ad dispute

Donald Trump announced on Saturday plans to increase tariffs on Canadian imports by 10 percent after Ontario aired a television advertisement criticizing American trade policies. The commercial featured Ronald Reagan’s words and aired on Friday and Saturday while the World Series played across North American screens.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford agreed to remove the spot after the weekend concluded. Trump accused Canadian officials of misrepresenting facts and called the advertisement a hostile action that warranted economic retaliation through higher import taxes.

The White House provided no details about implementation timing or which products would face increased rates. Canadian trade minister Dominic LeBlanc emphasized that federal authorities handle negotiations, not provincial leaders.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has worked to reduce existing tariffs that burden Canadian exports. American duties currently range from 35 percent to 50 percent on many items and 50 percent on steel and aluminum products.
