Trump kicks off Asia tour with trade talks and potential Kim meeting

Donald Trump touched down in Malaysia on Sunday to begin an Asian visit centered on trade negotiations with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The American leader aims to finalize an agreement ending the economic conflict between the two nations when they meet in South Korea later this week.

He attended the Association of Southeast Asian Nations gathering and signed a Malaysian trade pact while overseeing a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia that he helped negotiate.

The president travels to Tokyo on Monday for discussions with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Tuesday. He reaches Busan on Wednesday before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, and his Thursday session with Xi that could reshape global commerce.

Trump indicated openness to meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for the first time since 2019 if circumstances permit.
