UK pledges leading role in Gaza rebuilding, announces £20 million aid package
As the Gaza peace summit wrapped up in Egypt, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer pledged the UK would take a “leading role” in rebuilding the war-torn region. At the summit, Starmer announced a £20 million humanitarian aid package to address Gaza’s urgent needs, with further plans for long-term reconstruction.
Despite some diplomatic tension over the UK’s role in securing the U.S.-brokered ceasefire, Starmer emphasized the UK’s commitment to supporting the next phase of peace. This includes hosting a major conference on Gaza’s recovery and working with international partners to mobilize resources for rebuilding.
The UK’s reconstruction effort will focus on a “Palestinian-led” recovery, with no role for Hamas in governance. However, while the UK’s contributions are acknowledged, some U.S. and Israeli officials have criticized Britain’s claims of a vital role in the peace process. The UK remains determined to support Gaza’s reconstruction despite the pushback.
