UN urges restraint after deadly Afghanistan-Pakistan clashes

UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett expressed concern on Wednesday over the ongoing clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which have caused civilian casualties and displacement. He urged both sides to exercise restraint, protect civilians, and adhere to international law.

Bennett’s statement followed reports that Pakistani forces attacked the Spin Boldak district in southern Afghanistan, killing 12 civilians and injuring over 100. Afghan forces retaliated, reportedly killing several Pakistani soldiers and capturing military posts.

The clashes, which started early in the morning, continued for hours, causing casualties on both sides. Medical staff in Kandahar reported that many of the injured were women and children from nearby civilian areas.
