US names Steve Fagin Gaza ceasefire lead

The United States appointed Steve Fagin as civilian coordinator for a body overseeing the Gaza ceasefire on Friday. The career diplomat will partner with Army Lt. Gen. Patrick Frank at the Civil-Military Coordination Centre in southern Israel. The facility opened on Oct. 17 to monitor potential violations of the truce and manage humanitarian aid logistics. About 200 American troops staff the warehouse alongside Israeli soldiers, European forces, officials from the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, plus United Nations and aid workers.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio toured the location on Friday and described the effort as historic. He expressed cautious confidence about ongoing developments despite anticipated challenges. Fagin brings extensive Middle East expertise to his new role. Since 2022, he has led U.S. diplomatic operations in Yemen while navigating regional tensions, and he recently served for 3 months as the top American envoy in Baghdad.
