Bangladesh urges global financial reform at UNCTAD16 in Geneva

Bangladesh called for changes to global finance systems at a United Nations trade conference that ended on Wednesday in Geneva. Officials said current structures fail to address funding shortages and debt problems facing poor nations. The country helped negotiate the Geneva Consensus document that supports nations transitioning out of least developed status. Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman led the delegation at the gathering.

The four-day conference brought together trade ministers and business leaders to discuss economic policy. Bangladesh pushed for stronger language about technology access and foreign investment in the final agreement. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development approved a support program for developing countries. Mission staff secured provisions about climate challenges and production capacity in the outcome text.
