Varanasi potters see surge in clay lamp sales

This Diwali, the slogans “Adopt Swadeshi” and “Make in India” have brought smiles to potters in Varanasi, as demand for traditional clay lamps rises, replacing Chinese decorative items. In Suddhipur village alone, about 2,500 potters are working day and night to meet the growing demand for clay diyas.

Potters like Sunil Kumar, who has been in the business for 30-35 years, say the demand is so high that they can’t keep up. Dinesh Prajapati, a potter for 50 years, noted a shift in consumer preferences, with people now opting for handmade clay diyas over imported products. This surge in demand has boosted their business by around 40% compared to previous years.

For these artisans, this Diwali brings renewed hope, and there is a growing call to support campaigns like “Adopt Local Products” to help preserve this traditional art form.
