Kiran Rao reveals inspiration behind Laapataa Ladies’ landscape design

Filmmaker Kiran Rao, thrilled with her directorial success Laapataa Ladies winning 13 Filmfare Awards, shared insights into the film’s landscape and visuals. She explained that the fictional state of Nirmal Pradesh, created for the film, was inspired by the Bundelkhand region, spanning areas of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

Rao highlighted the choice of an arid landscape that is full of life, rather than being desolate. The production aimed for a unique topography—neither too green nor too dry—finding the perfect setting around Bhopal. The film’s visual texture reflects this drier quality, giving it a distinct, natural look. Laapataa Ladies is produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande under Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions.
