Venezuela closes Oslo embassy after Machado’s Nobel win
Venezuela announced on Monday it would close its embassy in Oslo, just days after María Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize. The Venezuelan government did not link the closure to Machado’s award, citing it as part of a foreign service restructuring. Norway’s foreign ministry confirmed the embassy closure but offered no explanation.
Machado, honored for her work promoting democratic rights in Venezuela, has long been a vocal critic of Maduro, who dismissed her as a “demonic witch.” Norway called the embassy closure “regrettable” but reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue with Venezuela.
Venezuela also closed its embassy in Australia, while opening new diplomatic posts in Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso. This move follows rising tensions between Caracas and Washington, especially after the US military targeted Venezuelan boats in a drug crackdown.
