Zafirov vows all towns will get drinking water access

Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov pledged that every settlement in Bulgaria will have access to drinking water by the end of the current administration’s term. Speaking in Omurtag alongside Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova, Zafirov met with local officials to address the water shortages affecting the region. He noted that Omurtag is currently the largest settlement in Bulgaria under water restrictions, with Breznik facing similar challenges.

Zafirov explained that two projects are underway to upgrade and replace Omurtag’s aging water supply network, which should address part of the issue. However, he stressed that the main obstacle remains the limited capacity of the current water source. Plans are in place to channel water from the Yastrebino dam, providing a long-term solution for both Omurtag and neighboring Antonovo. The Deputy Prime Minister expressed confidence in the cooperation between national and local authorities to secure funding and deliver reliable drinking water, emphasizing that access to water is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution.
