Zambry hails free education initiative for underprivileged students in Budget 2026

Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir has praised the government’s decision to offer free education for underprivileged students at public universities through the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN). Announced in Budget 2026, this move will help students from poor and B40 families access higher education without needing loans, easing their financial burden.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that 5,800 low-income students will benefit from this RM120 million annual initiative starting next year. Additionally, students who graduate with First Class Honours will be exempt from repaying PTPTN loans, potentially helping around 6,000 borrowers.

Zambry also welcomed the creation of 1,500 new student spots across 10 fields at research universities, calling it essential to provide more opportunities for qualified students. He further highlighted the RM18.6 billion allocation to improve higher education, including RM400 million for institutional upkeep.
