ZANU-PF wants to extend Mnangagwa’s term to 2030
Zimbabwe’s ruling party approved extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s tenure until 2030 on Saturday, formalizing a contentious proposal in the struggling nation. The 83-year-old leader seized power through a military-backed takeover in 2017, but his constitutionally mandated two terms expire in 2028. Party spokesman Nick Mnangagwa said the ZANU-PF annual congress voted to extend the presidential term based on developmental achievements and socioeconomic advances, directing officials to pursue necessary constitutional amendments.
Opposition figures vowed legal resistance against any constitutional changes permitting Mnangagwa to remain in office beyond his term limits. Lawyer Tendai Biti pledged to defend constitutional provisions against manipulation and corruption. Authorities arrested 10 people in Harare on Friday on charges of planning demonstrations demanding Mnangagwa’s resignation, with defendants facing allegations of inciting public violence ahead of a Monday bail hearing.
