Zimbabwe battles malaria surge in Mashonaland West
The government urges a joint effort from all sectors to tackle a surge in malaria cases after Mashonaland West recorded 78 deaths since January. Most fatalities occurred in the Hurungwe district, which reported 28 deaths. Officials link the rise to erratic rainfall and stagnant water.
Health teams have ramped up indoor spraying, distributed insecticide-treated nets, and launched awareness drives. New diagnostic tools, such as the Chemistry Analyzer, are being installed, and clinics maintain steady drug supplies. Community health workers now test residents at home and refer severe cases, cutting travel time for care.
Friday Kavhinga, a village health worker in Nyakasikana, said help now reaches people directly. The Red Cross supports these efforts by training workers, supplying test kits, and extending services to remote zones. Nationally, the health ministry aims to cut malaria cases by 90 percent by 2030, aligning with global goals to eliminate preventable deaths from the disease.
