Zimbabwe on high alert as locusts threaten crops from Botswana, Namibia
Zimbabwe is taking action to protect itself from African migratory locusts that have caused damage in Botswana and Namibia. The government has alerted all provinces to stay prepared and monitor the situation closely.
Professor Obert Jiri, the Permanent Secretary for Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, stressed the importance of quick action. Zimbabwe has dealt with locust invasions before, with the 2020 outbreak severely affecting food security.
The recent rains in the region have created conditions that could lead to more locust swarms. Zimbabwe is working with the International Red Locust Control Organisation to manage the threat and has trained teams to handle any potential outbreaks.
