1.9 million Bulgarians lack pharmacy access, campaign launched

In Bulgaria, 1.9 million people live in areas without a pharmacy, with 23 municipalities lacking one entirely. Despite 2.6% of GDP (about 4.7 billion leva) being spent on medicines, mostly out of patients’ pockets, many villages and small towns struggle with the high costs and low turnover that make maintaining a pharmacy unfeasible.

The Institute for Market Economy (IME) has launched the “Bring Health” campaign to improve access to medicines in smaller settlements, highlighting alternative solutions to make healthcare more accessible, provided there is a genuine effort to address the issue.
