16 killed in Mirpur garment factory fire, spotlighting safety failures
At least 16 people were killed and several others injured when a fire broke out at a garment factory and a nearby chemical warehouse in Mirpur, Dhaka, on Tuesday. The blaze started around 11:40 AM in the “Anwar Fashion” garment factory’s wash unit and quickly spread to the chemical warehouse, causing explosions that engulfed the building.
Rescue operations are still underway, with authorities warning the casualty count could rise. The fire has highlighted serious safety issues, as many chemical warehouses lack proper fireproofing, ventilation, and emergency exits, putting workers and surrounding communities at risk.
This is the latest in a series of deadly industrial fires in Bangladesh, including the Nimtoli fire in 2010, the Churihatta fire in 2019, and the Rupganj juice factory fire in 2021, all of which exposed similar safety lapses. These incidents underscore the urgent need for stricter fire safety regulations and regular inspections to prevent further loss of life.
