Hamas cracks down on rivals as Gaza clans rebel
Hamas had a rough time holding onto Gaza as the war went on, facing trouble from old rivals with ties to powerful local clans.
After a ceasefire kicked in, Hamas moved quickly to flex its muscles, taking out rivals in a crackdown. They seemed to get a green light from the U.S. to police the wrecked area for a while.
Some key clans have been at odds with Hamas for the last couple of years. Yasser Abu Shabab of the Abu Shabab clan in Rafah has been a thorn in their side. He’s got hundreds of fighters, claims he’s not working with Israel, but Hamas says otherwise.
The Doghmosh clan’s no slouch either, with deep roots in Gaza. Mumtaz Doghmosh, the head honcho, ran the Army of Islam and tangled with Hamas before. Their recent clash left several dead, but no one knows where Mumtaz is hiding.
