Trump, Xi to meet in South Korea amid US-China trade tensions

US President Donald Trump is still on track to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea at the end of October, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, despite recent tensions over tariffs and export controls.

The two countries had edged closer to an all-out trade war last week after China announced a major expansion of rare earth export controls, followed by Trump’s threat to raise tariffs. However, both sides have sought to calm markets, with Bessent emphasizing that a 100% tariff is not inevitable, and communication lines have reopened.

Trump and Xi are scheduled to meet at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea. While China’s Commerce Ministry confirmed ongoing negotiations, it warned the US against threatening new measures while seeking talks.

Despite optimism on Wall Street following Bessent’s comments, markets dropped after China imposed sanctions on US-linked subsidiaries. Both sides continue to blame each other for escalating tensions but also remain open to dialogue.
