402 new millionaires in Bulgaria as deposits grow in 2025
Bulgaria recorded 402 new millionaires in 2025, while deposits ranging from 500,000 to 1 million leva increased by 858, according to Bulgarian National Bank data. Georgi Zahariev, founder of Financial Academy, told NOVA NEWS that these statistics are misleading because authentic wealth calculations should subtract debts and primary residence value from total assets, suggesting the actual number of millionaires may be higher.
Zahariev explained that many reported accounts represent operational funds for daily expenses rather than genuine investments. He forecast continued growth in high net worth individuals through year-end but predicted a reversal in 2026 due to rising taxes and social security obligations. The expert criticized Bulgarians for keeping money in bank deposits that lose value to inflation, noting that only 7 to 8 percent of the population invests, primarily in real estate.
The financier expects funds to shift toward property, investment funds and other capital forms, particularly given concerns about the tax system and upcoming euro adoption on January 1, 2026.
