Afghan refugees in Pakistan face eviction, crackdown amid border tensions
Afghan refugees in Pakistan are facing increased harassment, arrests, and evictions amid rising border tensions between the two countries. Many refugees, including Rahimullah, a former Afghan army officer, have reported being forced to leave their homes due to lack of proper visas, with police and landlords increasing pressure on them.
Videos from Quetta show Pakistani police arresting undocumented Afghan migrants, with door-to-door searches and roadblocks in place. Afghan refugees have called on Pakistani authorities and the UN to extend their visas, fearing deportation or detention.
This crackdown follows clashes between Afghanistan and Pakistan at the border, along with airstrikes on Afghan provinces. Pakistan’s Defence Minister has stated that Afghan refugees’ stay in the country must end, while Kabul has rejected multiple requests from Pakistani officials to visit Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Pakistani airstrikes in Kandahar’s Spin Boldak district have resulted in casualties, with Afghan forces retaliating.
