Ajit Agarkar calls selector role biggest challenge of his career
Ajit Agarkar, India’s chief selector, described his current role as the “biggest challenge” of his cricketing career, admitting that the pressures of making tough selection decisions are greater than those he faced as a player or commentator. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit 2025, Agarkar reflected on his experiences in three roles: player, commentator, and selector.
While he found playing the most fulfilling, Agarkar said the selector’s job is the most demanding due to the level of responsibility and the impact of decisions on players’ careers. He acknowledged the intense scrutiny of his choices, especially in a cricket-loving country like India, where performance is under constant public and media evaluation. Agarkar also mentioned that he doesn’t pay attention to social media trends, like #JusticeForShreyasIyer, as he believes it’s a no-win situation.
