Amirudin – Malay language crucial for unity, national identity
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari stressed that Bahasa Melayu, as the national language, is more than just a tool for communication—it symbolizes loyalty to the nation and reflects local values and identity. He pointed out that proficiency in the language has always been a key government priority, as it strengthens unity and shapes Malaysia’s national identity.
Amirudin highlighted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recent remarks during the Budget 2026 presentation, where he reaffirmed his commitment to promoting Malay. He also criticized international schools in Malaysia for moving away from using Malay as a medium of instruction, calling it a violation of the National Language Act and the Federal Constitution.
Speaking at the launch of the 2025 National Language Month, Amirudin emphasized the importance of the event in fostering national unity and language appreciation. He suggested that the Malay language be further promoted through local industries like music, film, literature, and animation to boost Malaysia’s global presence.
In a press conference, Amirudin also stated that the state government has consistently followed the National Language Act in all official matters, including public signage. Prime Minister Anwar, in his speech, reminded that the strength of a nation lies in preserving its language while also mastering others to remain globally relevant.
