Malaysia pushes for stronger AI ecosystem to stay competitive, say ministers

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil and Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo are pushing for Malaysia to strengthen its digital infrastructure to stay ahead in the fast-moving world of artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the ‘Ministerial Forum: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on the Future Workforce’ during the iFuture 2025 summit, they highlighted the importance of a national strategy for embracing AI responsibly.

Fahmi stressed that AI should enhance human abilities, not replace them, and emphasized the need for the right mindset to guide its use. He also noted that while students are more open to AI, leaders must show the way in adopting emerging technologies. However, he cautioned about AI’s potential for misuse, citing the rise of deepfakes and scams.

Gobind added that building strong digital infrastructure, data sharing, and trust is crucial for Malaysia’s AI future. With global tech giants setting up data centers in the country, Malaysia is positioning itself for an AI-driven economy. He concluded that Malaysia must act swiftly to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s goal of becoming an AI nation by 2030.
