ATAB chief removed over ticket row
Bangladesh’s Commerce Ministry replaced Deputy Secretary Motakabbir Ahmed as administrator of the Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh on Wednesday. Joint Secretary Dr. Saif Uddin Ahmad assumes control, with orders to conduct the executive committee elections within 4 months. The directive from Director General Muhammad Rehan Uddin requires the preparation of voter lists and the transfer of authority to elected officials.
Ahmed’s departure follows allegations of connections to flight ticket price manipulation. Middle Eastern routes that typically cost 40,000 taka jumped to 100,000 taka after his appointment. Sources claim Ahmed traveled to London and Europe twice in two months with family members, using business-class tickets worth 22 lakh taka in total.
Officials accused Ahmed of exceeding authorized travel destinations and meeting with individuals whose licenses were canceled for syndicate activities. The Commerce Organization Act of 2022 provided a legal basis for the administrative change. Ministry documents cite greater organizational interests as justification for the personnel decision.
