Bangladesh Chief Justice advocates for women in judiciary at UNDP forum

Chief Justice of Bangladesh Syed Refaat Ahmed is in Bangkok for a UNDP event called “Shift Underway: Advancing Gender on the Bench for Sustainable Development.”

Speaking at the forum, he highlighted the importance of women in judicial leadership for improving justice and supporting sustainable development. He explained that women judges bring valuable perspectives to cases involving gender-based violence and family disputes.

In Bangladesh, while 625 women serve in the district judiciary, only 10% of High Court judges are women, and no woman has been appointed chief justice. He called for more transparent recruitment and better support for women in the judiciary.

The Chief Justice also met with officials from Thailand, UNDP, and Nepal during his visit. He will return to Bangladesh on October 18.
