Bangladesh Republic Party gets registration with elephant symbol
The Election Commission granted official registration to the Bangladesh Republic Party on Sunday, with the elephant as its electoral symbol, following a High Court directive issued on July 23. Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed signed the gazette notification awarding registration number 57 under the Representation of the People Order provisions.
Party Chairman KM Abu Hanif Hridoy received the certificate at the central office located at 88/1 Shahid Faruk Road in South Jatrabari. He described the registration as a democratic victory and said he had received justice.
Bangladesh has registered 57 political parties since the system began in 2008, before the ninth parliamentary election. Five parties lost their status through various court orders, though Jamaat-e-Islami recently regained registration.
The commission continues processing applications from 143 parties seeking registration ahead of the 13th parliamentary election. Officials identified the National Citizen Party and the Bangladesh Jatiya League as meeting preliminary conditions after field investigations narrowed 22 shortlisted applicants.
