Bangladesh teachers threaten march over pay demands
Teachers from Bangladesh’s non-government institutions under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme have threatened to march towards the Secretariat if their demands are not met, as their sit-in protests in Dhaka entered its third day on Tuesday. They are demanding a 20% house rent allowance, a medical allowance of Taka 1,500, and a 75% festival bonus for MPO-listed employees.
The protests, led by the MPO-affiliated Education Nationalisation Alliance, are being held at Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka. Delwar Hossain Azizi, the alliance’s member secretary, emphasized that teachers will not return to work until a notification is issued to meet their demands. Despite proposals from the education advisor, Azizi stated that the teachers rejected further negotiations, calling for an official gazette notification.
The protests began after the finance division approved an increase in the house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers and staff. Police used water cannons, baton charges, and sound grenades to disperse the protesters, leading them to relocate to Shaheed Minar. The Awami League condemned the government’s response, criticizing the use of force against teachers demanding fair pay.
