Benapole port shutdown causes massive trade chaos

Bangladesh suspended import and export activities at Benapole Land Port after 6pm without prior notice, causing massive disruptions and financial losses for traders. Officials claim the measure stops smuggled goods from entering the country, but business leaders dispute the lack of consultation before implementation.

More than 1,500 trucks remain stuck at the Bangladesh-India border each day, with daily trade worth approximately 200 to 250 crore taka severely affected. The port previously processed 400 to 450 trucks daily but now handles only 180 to 200 vehicles.

Perishable goods valued at 100 to 150 crore taka face spoilage risks daily, costing the government significant revenue. The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry called the sudden closure unacceptable and urged authorities to restore normal operations immediately.

Trade groups warn businesses may redirect shipments to alternate ports if restrictions continue, further reducing government income.
