BNP hopes Tarique to return by November
BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said acting chairman Tarique Rahman will likely arrive in Bangladesh by November. The senior party official told reporters at his Gulshan residence on Friday that the exact date would be announced soon. Rahman confirmed through media interviews that he plans to compete in the next national election, but his specific constituency remains undecided. Party leaders want Chairperson Khaleda Zia to run for parliament if her medical condition allows it.
The opposition party aims to approve candidates for 200 seats before November ends. Salahuddin noted that talks continue with the Nationalist Citizen Party, but no formal alliance agreement exists yet. Changes to electoral regulations may discourage smaller parties from forming coalitions because revised laws limit their ability to use partner organizations’ symbols. BNP officials had supported reforms that would let alliance members contest under different party emblems.
